Frederic Bard: The sweet side of traffic

چکیده
JCB • VOLUME 214 • NUMBER 3 • 2016 234 At the age of seven, Frederic Bard’s father taught him about the atomic composition of water molecules. Bard was fl abbergasted to learn that water is not simply “made of water.” He became fascinated by the idea that deeper truths about the world were waiting to be discovered, and in middle school he fell in love with biology. Noticing his interest in class, a teacher predicted that he would become a medical doctor. He rebuked and claimed that he wanted to become a researcher, though at the time he had very little idea what it meant. Throughout his upbringing, Bard’s parents moved every few years all over France. He found it an excitement to leave behind the past to discover a new place and new people, and as an adult, he has kept with this trend, always moving west until Singapore, which has been his home for the last 10 years. Bard now operates his lab out of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research. His research investigates the regulation of glycosylation through membrane trafficking and the ways in which various toxins hijack the traffi cking machinery. We contacted him to learn more.

Intelligent Traffic Management System for Prioritizing Emergency Vehicles in a Smart City (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Traffic congestion worldwide has led to loss of human lives due to failure in transporting accident victims, critical patients, medical equipment and medicines on time. With the unending growth in vehicular traffic everywhere, Internet of Things (IOT) and Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) have embarked as a promising platform for an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). Many researches h...
متن کاملA Case of Dissociated Taste Impairment after Injury of the Major Petrosus Nerve
We report the case of a 16-year-old female patient with taste impairment of the soft palate. After receiving a skull fracture due to a traffic accident, she experienced the taste of bitter chocolate. CT showed the fracture around the right temporal bone. Electrogustometry showed that the decreased sensation of taste was restricted to the right soft palate. Shirmer test showed that lacrimal secr...
متن کاملERK8 is a negative regulator of O-GalNAc glycosylation and cell migration
ER O-glycosylation can be induced through relocalisation GalNAc-Transferases from the Golgi. This process markedly stimulates cell migration and is constitutively activated in more than 60% of breast carcinomas. How this activation is achieved remains unclear. Here, we screened 948 signalling genes using RNAi and imaging. We identified 12 negative regulators of O-glycosylation that all control ...
متن کاملPNAS Plus Significance Statements Joint CO2 and CH4 accountability for global warming
We develop (pp. E2865–E2874) a transparent climate debt index, termed international natural debt, which combines historical emissions of CO2 from fossil sources and land use/forestry as well as CH4. It covers 205 countries and is a function of emissions, lifetimes, and radiative forcings. This index can be used to assess the implications of choosing between CO2 and CH4 control measures and faci...
متن کاملThe Use of Sweet Almond Meal as a Protein Source in Japanese Quails Diets
In the first experiment, the chemical composition, apparent metabolizable energy (AME), AME corrected for nitrogen (AMEn), true metabolizable energy (TME), TME corrected for nitrogen (TMEn) values of the sweet almond meal were determined in adult Leghorn cockerels. The second experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of different levels of sweet almond meal at 0, 100, 200 and 300 g/kg on...
